What is AI reverse engineering?
Reverse engineering turns a physical part into a CAD model. A 3D scanner captures the shape as a mesh (STL), and an engineer rebuilds it as clean, editable geometry. AI speeds up the first step: it reads the mesh, recognises the type of part and its features, and proposes a modeling strategy before anyone opens Geomagic Design X or SOLIDWORKS.
How this tool works
- Your STL is opened in the browser. Size, volume, surface area and closed-mesh status are measured on your device.
- Three preview views and the measurements are sent to the AI. The file itself is never uploaded.
- You get the likely part type, features, material, process, a step-by-step CAD plan and tolerance suggestions.
What AI can't do (yet)
AI can't guess hidden geometry, exact fits or the original designer's intent. Critical diameters, threads and datum features still need measuring and checking. For production parts, the plan is a starting point. CADfinity's reverse engineering service delivers the finished parametric model with a deviation report.

What is AI reverse engineering?
It uses AI to read a 3D scan or mesh, recognise the part and its features, and suggest how to rebuild it as an editable CAD model. It speeds up planning, but an engineer still builds and checks the final CAD.
Is my STL file uploaded or stored?
No. The file is opened in your browser. Only the measurements and three small preview images are sent for analysis, and nothing is stored.
Can AI convert an STL to STEP automatically?
Not reliably for engineering parts. Automatic surfacing gives a closed shape, but not design intent: no clean sketches, features or tolerances. This tool gives you the modeling plan; CADfinity can deliver the finished parametric STEP.
What units does it assume?
Millimetres, which is the default for most scanners and CAD exports. If your file is in inches, the sizes will look 25.4× smaller.
